The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
