This Creepy Thriller
The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective despite the lack of a continuation. Taking place in 1978 Denver, a series of child abductions has made the youth on edge. When Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and locked up in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. Yet the old telephone on the wall keeps ringing, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, nighttime, on Film4
This Dramatic Portrait
In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation of the disgraced religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield plays the venal Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the nation's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, however the lead actress manages to show the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, Film4
